A former auditor-general is the capital’s senator-elect, according to preliminary results from the Election Commission.

Turnout at the polls was low yesterday, with 18 million of 44 million eligible voters participating in the election to Thailand’s upper house.

More than two million voters chose “none of the above,” and about one in five votes cast were deemed invalid and thrown out.

Jaruwan Benjawan Mainthaka, a former auditor-general, won more than 500,000 votes to represent Bangkok in the senate.

Elsewhere Waraporn Asavahame is projected to win the seat for Samut Prakan province, Arporn Sarakham leads in Udon Thani, and Adisorn Kamnerdsiri won the seat in Chiang Mai, NNT reported.
