Taste the true reason for the season at ‘Songkran Harmony Loincloth’

“The Spirit of Songkran” once welcomed visitors to the Ministry of Culture’s home page before it was quietly removed three years ago following a culture minister’s prosecution of three girls for dancing topless on Silom Road.

For a family friendly Songkran without undulating teens exposing themselves, the conservative custodians of culture will host a very “polite” event at Siam Square.

This year’s Songkran Mesa Pha Khao Ma Ruam Thai, or “Songkran Harmony Loincloth” event’s theme is “Isaan Joy” and will feature dance and folk plays from northeastern Thailand.

The event is organized by the Ministry of Culture and Chulalongkorn University, whose students will probably be the only ones square enough or obligated to actually attend.

The event runs from 1 to 6pm on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday at Siam Square.

Information about other events, including other traditional Songkran activities from other provinces, fashion shows and concerts is available online.
