Khao San bookings down nearly a third for Songkran

Khao San hotel operators say reservations down 20-30% for Songkran

Reservations at hotels at the popular backpacker destination are down 20 to 30 percent for this year’s Songkran period, according to the Khao San Road Business Association.

Association Vice President Prasit Chiaranaisakun said annual Songkran festivities on Khao San will go ahead despite the ongoing political demonstrations causing concern among foreign tourists, some of whom have decided against reserving hotel rooms in the area.

The annual Songkran festivities at Khao San will take place April 12 to 15 with an emphasis placed on culture. According to Prasit, the event will be sponsored with a budget of THB3 million. More than 100,000 people are expected to visit the area to splash water over the four days; most of whom will be Thai. Around THB200 million is expected to be generated as a result.

Around 700 policemen and 200 volunteer security guards will provide security for the event, NNT reported.
