Tanker spilling oil into fisheries west of Bangkok

Oil is spreading from a capsized tanker west of Bangkok after it sank off the coast of Samut Sakhon yesterday.

The Thai vessel was carrying 60,000 liters of used oil when its crew discovered the engine room was flooding, at which point they said the ship’s oil valves were closed, according to local marine official Surachai Bura

The coast of Samut Sakhon is an important fishing area, and the oil is already causing damage to the many farms there.

Oil dispersing chemicals have been used to limit the oil’s spread while efforts are being made to raise the tanker.

Police said they are considering whether to prosecute the ship’s owner, Bangkok Post reported.
