Customs intercepts Vietnam-bound elephant tusks

Ivory seized by customs at Atlanta Airport.

Customs officials at Suvarnabhumi Airport arrested a man attempting to smuggle seven elephant tusks and other ivory onto a flight.

The unidentified Cambodian gentleman was headed to Hanoi, Vietnam with 22 kilograms of tusks and other illicit goods estimated to be worth about THB2 million.

All of the goods will be forwarded to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. Authorities will also contact Vietnamese officials to report the incident.

Elephant tusks are protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It is a multilateral treaty that protects endangered plants and animals, including elephants, NNT reported.
