Every twenty- to forty-something Thai would have come across the famous textbook characters Mana and Manee, who helped them recite texts to learn reading and speaking, much like the Dick and Jane of farang babies’ schooling.
“Manee will hit the crab. The crab runs away,” the text reads.
Ajarn Ratchanee Sripaiwan, the author of Mana Manee Piti Chujai, a series of Thai-language textbooks for primary school students, died Tuesday. She was 82.
Her textbooks were used in Thai schools from 1978 to 1994. Recently, the pages have been passed online for people to get sentimental about their childhoods.
