Red shirt rally called off

Government supporters last night called off a mass rally planned for Friday due to fears of violence.

The United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship originally scheduled the rally to coincide with a court’s ruling on the legal status of one of its leaders but canceled at the last minute to avoid possible clashes with rival protesters, according to spokesman Thanawut Wichaidith.

“Let me stress that this is not a retreat,” Thanawut told Khaosod. “But we will only rally when there is situation, and what we want is an unarmed rally.”

The UDD expects their next rally to occur in Nakhon Pathom province just west of Bangkok, where a weekend rally was held earlier this month.
