Two die in Phuket bungy jumping accident

Two Thai men died while checking a bungy jump at a soon-to-be-opened business in Phuket, falling 52 metres in a metal basket when the sling broke, police have said. More details are emerging of the accident at the bungy jump business in Chalong that killed engineer Pitakchai Wongsricha, 30, and company owner and Krung Thai Bank employee Todsaporn Suksri, 27, around 8.30pm yesterday (April 18).

Also inside the basket, but who somehow managed to escape and survive due to the bungy cord around his body was Anupong Kantawong, 37, who was taken to Vachira Hospital in a coma.

Police said the three men went up in the basket to test out the bungy system, but the sling broke when they were at the top. The basket fell down, killing the two men instantly, while Mr Anupong fell into the water then was rescued.

Many people witnessed the crash – including this Phuket expat – and by the time police arrived there was a large crowd gathered.

Earlier in the day the business had taken part in a merit-making ceremony because it was due to officially open in the coming days.

In 2009, British tourist Rishi Baveja nearly died when his harness came loose at the Jungle Bungy Jump in Phuket.
