GOLDEN OLDIES: Save the Beatles

Thailand’s local indie rock scene has stepped up to single-handedly save rock ’n’ roll, with this ongoing series of tribute evenings. The eleventh and latest installment “Save the Beatles” features six alternative acts like Rocket Science and Beer putting their own spin on Beatles classics, and (maybe if you ask nicely) even taking a few requests. See, Vice, there’s still hope for Thailand’s youth yet!

STAGING DRAMA: BU Playfest 2014 presents Glass Menagerie

It’s been a busy season for Bangkok University’s theatre company as they put on BU Playfest 2014, a series of 13 classic stage productions over 13 weeks. This weekend is The Glass Menagerie, the 1945 play that first thrust famous American playwright Tennessee Williams into the limelight. Also to mark down on the calendar: Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (May 1 to 3), Venus in Fur (June 12 to 14) and Pippin (June 19 to 21).

FOLK DANCE: Roo Lee Pen Khon

This free workshop at the Museum Siam teaches the ancient art of traditional Thai dance drama or khon. The performance and narrative storytelling, which was once performed solely by men with masks in Thai royal court, has evolved and adapted throughout the years. At this workshop, people can learn the history of khon, try out the dance techniques and even take in a professional live demonstration. With only 30 spaces, reservation is a must!

POLITICAL PAINTINGS: Burma: The Quiet Violence

This exhibition of 38 paintings takes a hard look at Burma’s political situation between 1995 and 2005, from the detention of Aung San Suu Kyi to media censorship. The works were secretly transported to Bangkok many years ago, because of their sensitive nature) and are finally being shown by many years. The artist, Myint Swe, is one of Burma’s most influential artists right now, having staged more than 50 exhibitions in the country.

HIT THE WAVES: Rip Curl Summer Carnival

Downtown Bangkok gets outfitted with a giant pool on Saturday for the Rip Curl Summer carnival. There will be a professional wakeboarding competition, including a trick session by 16-year-old world champion Daniel Grant. Look out for a summer market from Cheeze magazine featuring all the latest in local designers and trends followed by an evening pool party.

BLOCK PARTY 2.0: What The Festival

WTF celebrates its fourth anniversary this weekend with a full program from storytelling to a live funk band and (of course) mouth-watering bites. Sunday afternoon is rounded out with a good old block party, with international short film screenings (What The Festival 2014) starting around 4 pm.
