Fire destroys Bang Pli Market

A huge fire destroyed the 150-year-old Bang Pli Market in Samut Prakan last night.

The market, which consists of about 50 wooden structures and buildings crammed together in a small area of 150 square meters, quickly caught fire and strong winds helped the blaze to spread.

Firefighters faced difficulty reaching the fire due to the market’s condensed structural layout.

Rescue efforts were also hindered when seven volunteers from Poh Teck Tung Foundation were injured in a car accident on their way to help locals.

The accident was blamed on a tire exploding which caused the vehicle to flip over on Rama II tollway. Four of the seven volunteers were seriously injured.

The volunteers were admitted to Saint Louis, Bangpakok, Somdech Phra Pinklao, and King Chulalongkorn Memorial hospitals, Kapook reported.

The fire was completely put out after two hours, according to NNT.
