Vape craze alarms health officials

The vape craze has hit the streets of Bangkok and new rules are being considered to limit its impact.

Electronic cigarettes, which contain tobacco but do not emit smoke, fall outside the scope of tobacco laws, leading to sales of illegally imported products being widely available on the streets of Bangkok.

“E-cigarettes are not covered by any measures under tobacco laws of Thailand,” said anti-tobacco activist Prakit Vathesatogkit.

With nothing on the books pertaining to e-cigarattes, officials are considering amending the Tobacco Products Control Act to ban the devices outright, Bangkok Post reported, as some tobacco companies have started building their own e-cigarette businesses in Thailand.
