Hunger Games stars approve use of salute to ‘fight oppression’

Actors Sam Claflin (“Finnick Odair”) and Nataliie Dormer (“Cressida), stars of the Hunger Games series.

Several actors are saluting Thai protesters’ use of a defiant gesture taken from the fictional universe of their movie series.

Having learned that a three-fingered salute used in the Hunger Games to oppose a totalitarian regime had been adopted by anti-coup protesters in Thailand, several actors responded positively.

Natalie Dormer expressed approval to Sky News for the salute being used in a positive way in general comments that did not address the situation in Thailand.

“Anything that galvanises people in a positive way to fight against oppression cannot be criticised in any shape or form. If it’s helping them, then it can only be a positive,” the 32-year-old English actress said.

Dormer appears in the series’ next installment as journalist-turned-rebel “Cressida,” but is best known for her turn as Game of Thrones’ Marjorie Tyrell.

Actor Sam Claflin, who appears in the series as Finnick Odair, said it was a humbling reminder that “people do hear every word that is spoken” in their internationally successful films.

Protesters were first noticed using the salute over the weekend, and its use has spread since then.

Several people were reportedly arrested Sunday after making the gesture.

The military junta has not banned the gesture, but said it would arrest anyone who did not lower their arms when told to.
