Family surprised to learn blood-sweating son not cursed

When Kittisak Chareonin feels stress, he doesn’t just sweat. He sweats blood.

According to his family, the 10-year-old boy began sweating blood two months ago after he served as a novice at a local temple in Khon Khaen province. His weird medical condition was discovered when he was meditating with other monks and blood started seeping from his head and face.

The monks admitted him to a hospital, but the doctor could not figure out the problem.

Turning from conventional medicine, his family did the next reasonable thing and sought out a fortune teller.

The fortune teller told his family the boy sweats blood because he stole some elephant sculptures from a shrine at his school.

It’s unclear if he ever stole anything, but the family was convinced to order their child to apologize to the shrine and offer a flower garland in hope his condition would improve.

And the plan worked, if in an unintended way. News of the incident – perhaps aided by the shrine’s power – attracted media attention and eventually that of doctors at Khon Kaen’s Srinakarin Hospital.

Doctors this morning diagnosed the boy with hematidrosis, a very rare condition in which a human sweats blood. Often brought on by moments of intense stress, the disease is a reflex reaction which causes capillary rupture, which releases blood into nearby sweat glands.

Dr. Lelawadee Techasathien, the hospital’s pediatrician, said less than 100 people in the world have been diagnosed with this condition, and Kittisat is the fourth known in Thailand.

For now, he will stay at the hospital under doctor’s care for treatment, which can take a long time, Channel 3 and Komchadluek reported.
