Former model Chatchaya Cuesta Ramos, aka Yuyee, was sentenced to 15 years in prison today for smuggling cocaine into the country.
The Criminal Court sentenced the 40-year-old ex-model to prison and a fine two years after she was arrested at Don Mueang airport with 251 milligrams of cocaine stuffed inside a chocolate package in her bag. She’d just entered Thailand from Vietnam.
At her trial, Yuyee said the drugs were meant for herself and not for sale, but the court rejected her defense.
Her punishment was commuted to 15 years and a THB1.5 million fine due to her testimony.
Yuyee was also given another three-month jail term for possession of endangered species. While searching her home two years ago, authorities found a wild menagerie, including an Asian golden cat, three rare turtles, and over twenty snakes.
Her lawyer Prasert Boonkaew said her family is preparing THB2 million for her to make bail as they prepare an appeal, Thairath and The Nation reported.
