Junta ends rice subsidy, student tablet programs

Two signature policy platforms of the former Pheu Thai-led government were dismantled Friday by the military junta.

Expensive subsidies for rice farmers and free tablet computers for students will no longer be supported with public funds, at least not in their current forms, according to Gen. Prayuth Chanocha.

In discussions of their economic plans for the nation, military authorities said they’d help farmers through education programs and systems to reduce their production costs. Prayuth did not rule out a future rice scheme, but said any future subsidy would need transparency.

Meanwhile, education officials are meeting today to discuss how to reallocate the THB4 billion budgeted for the “One Tablet per Child” program this year. Proposals include building more computer laboratories and repairing facilities at many old schools, Bangkok Post reported.
