Thailand awaits trafficking report verdict from US

The economy could take a measurable hit should the results of an annual report from the US find Thailand has failed to take adequate measures to end human trafficking.

Although officials have signaled their optimism throughout the week and made various claims about Thailand’s commitment to stamp out human trafficking, there seems resignation to the likelihood Washington will downgrade Thailand in the 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report, due later tonight.

Under U.S. law, nations which fall into the third tier are subject to economic sanctions. The United States is a major consumer of Thai seafood.

Although concern over the fate of Rohingya refugees hung over Thailand’s status, a damning report last week on slavery in the Thai fishing fleet dampened enthusiasm that Thailand’s rank would remain unchanged.
