Tapping into outrage, celebrities call for rapists’ deaths

Outrage over the murder and rape of a 13-year-old girl has prompted celebrity calls for a death penalty for rapists and an eye-for-an-eye justice system.

Tapping into the collective rage after Kochakorn “Kaem” Pitakjumnong was found discarded alongside tracks this morning, stars turned to their online followings to draw attention to their own disgust and demand death for rapists along with Shariah-style punishment of criminals.

Messages such as “rape = death penalty” and “steal = hand cut, rape = penis removal, murder = death sentence,” are frequently mentioned in posts by celebs such as Ekkachai “DJ Eaky” Auasangkomseth, Piyawat “DJ PK” Kempetch and Pharunyoo “Tack” Rojanawuttitham.

Panadda “Boom” Wongphudee, a former pageant queen and actor, used Instagram as a call to action.

“It’s time to do this seriously,” she wrote. “I’ll collect 100,000 names on a petition calling for the death penalty for rapists. Please submit your identity document and signature to me. I’ll file the petition myself.”

Kaem’s body was found beside the tracks in Prachuap Khiri Khan province early this morning and police have arrested rail worker Wanchai Saengkhao who reportedly confessed to raping the girl and then forcing her out the window of the moving train. She died on impact, according to an autopsy report.

Similar calls for capital punishment were raised in India last year during a highly publicized rape case, which sparked public outrage over a broken justice system and patriarchal, cultural  tolerance for rape.
