Lecturer accused of trading grades for 7-Eleven stamps

Those addictive little stamps from 7-Eleven that clog your handbag or wallet have found another use.

A university lecturer is under investigation after she appears to admit on tape to accepting them from students in exchange for higher grades.

“Suda, you gave me 20 stamps, and you got an A when your brains probably wouldn’t even earn you a B,” the unnamed teacher said.

In the video secretly recorded by a student and published on YouTube on Sunday, the lecturer from Kalasin Rajabhat University rages at the class after her stamp-for-grades scheme was disclosed to the university’s board. In the video, she confesses to improving grades for certain students after they gave her stamps.

She also seems to offer a principled defense:

“Did I really force all of you to give me the stamps?” she added. “Puh-lease!”

Already a kind of pseudo-currency to be traded between friends or used to tip service staff, is there anything those little stamps can’t buy?

Niwat Klinngam, who chaired a meeting of Rajabhat university rectors, told Khaosod that a committee to question the lecturer has been appointed.

“The committee is investigating the issues,” Niwat said. “I cannot announce whether she has been found guilty just yet, or if she has committed a serious offense. Teachers are supposed to teach and not take advantage of their students. As far as I know, she had recently passed her probation.”

Niwat says the class was conducted for the students from the Faculty of Education who would need at least a C to graduate. Lower grades would mean they must retake the class.
