Alleged accomplice in train rape-murder withdraws his confession

A rail worker who police said had admitted to being an accomplice in Wanchai Sangkao’s alleged rape-murder of a young passenger withdrew his confession yesterday, saying it was made under duress.

During a second round of questioning, Nattakorn Chamnarn, 19, a state railway employee who worked on the same train as Wanchai, told police that he knew nothing about the rape but was beaten and forced into making a false confession by police.

Nattakorn has been held at Prachuabkirikhan Prison since Sunday after police said he admitted to being a lookout for Wanchai while he raped the minor and knew her body was thrown off the train, Morning News reported.

Authorities denied abusing Nattakorn while Prachuabkirikhan Prison insisted Nattakorn and Wanchai are being held safely with four other prisoners being held on drug charges and are monitored by CCTV.

This afternoon, police Gen. Thanet Soontornsuk, Prachuabkirikhan police commander, said there is sufficient circumstantial evidence to convict Nattakorn, but did not reveal what that was, Spring News reported.
