Dead on arrival: Squirrel taped up in dark box, thrown around until dead

An investigation isn’t necessary to understand what killed a cute, slender rodent with brown stripes.

The squirrel could have died from the trauma of being thrown around or simply asphyxiated in the dark, but the real killers are the seller who put it in the box and the genius who believed assurances it would arrive safely.

Pathum Thani resident “Omelet” recounted on Facebook how she ordered a squirrel from Lampang province and paid extra to have it delivered on a bus and then was surprised to find it had been shipped in a box and was dead on arrival yesterday.

According to screengrabs of a chat with the online group “Sell-Buy squirrels and other animals at chill prices,” Omelet asked many times with whether her new little friend would arrive in good health.

Q: “EMS? Will they throw the box?”

A: “No. It’s safe.”

Q: “Will he be okay? I’m a little concerned.”

A: “Sort of.”

Q: “What about if he dies?”

A: “Don’t worry. It’s definitely safe.”

The parcel arrived three days later, and she opened it to find the little animal inside was dead.

As if its death wasn’t a bummer for her day, she also complained that the merchant only returned THB350 of the THB750 she’d paid to have the squirrel delivered.

Animals? They’re not products, folks.
