Suvarnabhumi Airport, until recently straining from overuse, will see a decrease of two-to-four million travelers by the end of this year.
Anticipating a fall from 52 million last year to 48 or 50 million, the updated forecast from the airport’s director includes travelers who transfer through Suvarnabhumi either by an international or domestic flight.
Director Raweewan Netarakavesan believes it will be “impossible” to see growth at the airport, certainly not the kind of increases hoped for by officials.
Tourism officials hope a recent visa fee waiver for Taiwanese and Chinese tourists from August to October will help boost the slumping tourism sector. However travel news site TTR Weekly said that it won’t make a significant difference as the fee is a small factor for Chinese travellers.
The number of tourists who purchase a travel package or use touring services from the Association of Thai Travel Agents dropped 43.3 percent in the first half of this year.
