Football refs promise Emerald Buddha they’ll stop cheating

They’ve tried polygraph tests and administrative suspensions, but the cheating by football officials just won’t stop.

With all else failed and the sport’s viability at stake, the Football Association of Thailand asked more than 100 referees to swear an oath to the Emerald Buddha yesterday,

Association Vice President Chinnasen Thongkomol said referees would be motivated to be honest lest the Emerald Buddha punish them.

Thanom Borikut, a referee suspended due to a series of suspicious calls, said that by talking to the sacred statue and promising to be honest, the referees proved they were honest.

He was reinstated after making his oath.
