From throughout the stately district of Monorom in that storied province called Chainat, they come.
Whether alone or in small groups or with their families, all stream in with one purpose: to worship the haunted coconut tree.
It all began when someone snapped a photo of a tree, the original reason for which has already lost to legend.
In that photo, the shadow of woman’s face magically appeared. The phenomenal photo went on to fuel the flames of local’s imaginations and superstitions.
They say the tree’s stalks grow in a shape similar to that of a Naga, the sacred serpent from Buddhist and Hindu mythology.
There has also been a report that someone attempted to take a photo of the tree with a mobile phone, but somehow his phone was all messed up, so he had to ask for permission from the tree by lighting incense sticks and talking to the spirit who lives inside it.
After showing his respect to the haunted tree (and maybe a restart?) his phone suddenly worked just fine, and he snapped a really sweet pic of the haunted coconut tree, Sanook reported.
