Nine babies found inside a Lat Phrao condo brought new scrutiny to Thailand’s unregulated market for surrogate mothers as authorities are trying to determine how they got there.
When authorities entered the Niche ID condominium on Soi Lat Phrao 130 Tuesday on a tip, they found nine babies, nine nannies, a pregnant women, and a Japanese secretary. All nine babies were between one-month- and six-months-old.
Now they’re trying to determine whether the babies are all the children of a wealthy, anonymous Japanese businessman, or more horrifically, are being farmed for harvesting of their priceless stem cells.
“The Japanese father loves his babies and comes to visit them every week,” said lawyer Rattaprathan Tulathorn, who contacted authorities to say he represented the Japanese businessman who would sue to have his babies returned.
Meanwhile former politico turned children’s crusader Paveena Hongsakul urged authorities to investigate the possibility the babies were born for their stem cells. She asked police to investigate another case where a surrogate mother lost her baby seven months into term to “find out if the foetus’s spinal fluid was extracted for the manufacture of cosmetics,” The Nation reported.
The infants are now being cared for at the Pakkred Babies’ Home in Nonthaburi province while DNA tests are conducted to determine their parentage, Bangkok Post reported.
