Rumors that popular downtown cinema houses Lido and Scala would survive at least three more years were quashed today.
After word spread online the contracts of art-house Lido and culturally treasured Scala theaters were extended three years, the Property Management Office at Chulalongkorn University this morning denied the rumors.
While the architecturally significant Scala is safe from demolition through the end of 2016, a Chula representative said Lido’s contract actually expired in June. A new contract for the inexpensive theater, which just held Bangkok’s first silent film fest and is one of few places to see non-blockbuster films, is under consideration.
Weighing heavily over Lido’s future is Chulalongkorn’s ongoing plans, now that Siam Square One has opened, to develop sois two and three of Siam Square, where the theater complex is located.
