Pattaya view-blocking condo project paused

Officials have ordered a halt to the construction of a new, view-spoiling luxury condo in Pattaya, but not because of the controversy over its size.

Days after outrage erupted over the Waterfront condominium project, Pattaya Governor Ittiphol Khunplome said at a news conference yesterday that its builders have ignored the city’s decision to temporarily revoke its construction permit due to several unapproved features.

That move was unrelated to complaints that the project ruins the ocean view from the popular Phra Tamnak Hill viewpoint, made by people who suddenly noticed the enormous building’s frame continued to push skyward.

Ittiphol said the permission to construct the Waterfront project was revoked Aug. 1 because the elevator and stair areas are different from the plan submitted for approval. Bali Hai Co. Ltd., a company under developer Tulip Group, was told to submit a correct construction plan within 45 days.

An inspection however discovered construction is still going on, and Pattaya City now says it will file a police report over the matter, Itthiphol added.

Regarding the ocean view controversy, the governor confirmed the city did approve the construction of a 53-storey condominium on the spot in 2008 but will re-consider pros and cons of the building and discuss with the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy again, Matichon reported.
