‘Baby factory’ doctor to turn himself in

The doctor involved with the “baby factory” surrogate clinic used by a Japanese businessman who is believed to have fathered at least 16 children will turn himself in, according to police.

But no real hurry for the doctor, who police won’t publicly identify, as an arrest warrant will only be issued if he fails to show up by Sept. 6, said police Col. Decha Promsuwan.

The unidentified doctor allegedly performed in-vitro fertilization on five surrogate mothers. They are all linked to Mitsutoki Shigeta, a Japanese man who fled the country after authorities discovered 12 babies linked to him inside an upscale condominium in Lat Phrao district.

He faces up to three years in prison if found guilty of providing unlicensed surrogacy services and of violating the medical council’s code of conduct, which prohibits commercial surrogacy, Bangkok Post reported.
