Foul times for our furry friends

Looking to start the weekend with a well-deserved knot in our collective hearts, The Nation published a round-up of recent acts of cruelty to highlight the plight of animals, particularly in Bangkok and Chonburi provinces.

At least four stray dogs, which regularly got some shut-eye outside a police station in Chonburi, were poisoned to death Thursday. Police suspect the perpetrators to be teenage illegal road racers whose motorbikes were recently confiscated.

One of the strays, known as ‘Chao Sing’, was pitifully trying to wake one of his dead canine friends up.

Particularly affected by the incident was Kanya Hongsachart, a 50-year-old woman who had been feeding the animals for years.

“They would only bark at loud motorcycles,” she tearfully recounted.

Torturing or killing an animal without reason is punishable by a maximum fine of THB1,000.

Strays in Tak province also experienced a similar tragedy. Tossaporn Pakasinay said he’ll bring some strays to a local animal shelter after finding them “poisoned again” for the third time Tuesday night.

“They were having convulsions, so I quickly fed them egg whites and medicines [from a vet],” he said.

Another incident also occurred in Bangkok early last week, where a Pomeranian’s legs were cut and exposed to toilet cleaner.

Aranya Surabutr, its owner, found her dog lying in a pool of blood and detergent in her house’s garage. It is undergoing treatment and may need amputation.

This weekend let’s keep in mind all our neighbors, on however many legs they walk.
