Check out the history of the currency at Coin Museum (PHOTOS)

Only a few steps away from the tourist ghetto-slash-paradise of Khao San Road sits the recently opened Coin Museum inside what was once Currency Management unit of the Treasury Department.

Located on Chakrabongse Road, the museum was refurbished and now its first floor hosts the first phase of the main exhibition and three temporary exhibitions. The second and third floors of building will hold a library and learning center for public use by the end of 2016.

While waiting in the queue visitors can explore the temporary exhibitions along with a worthwhile museum shop and cafe. Everything’s in three languages: English, Thai and Braille. Audio guides are available in English as the human guides only speak Thai.

The highlight is the main hall’s first room, where a “4D” installation takes visitors on a history lesson that glosses over the boring details. It’s enough to keep the children entertained while you stare transfixed at all the money.

The museum is open from 10am to 6pm every day and entrance is free until the end of September. Tours start every 20 minutes and take about 30 minutes. Check out the Coin Museum on Facebook for more information.
