Hi-So Isaan mall food: Zaaap times at ‘Sansab’

COCONUTS HOT SPOTS — Prior to my experience with Sansab, I was among those skeptical of restaurants within tourist-filled malls, which too often are overpriced and unworthy of my moolah.

That changed after a chance encounter with this Isaan restaurant, whose highly visual menu and vibrant-colored walls prompted me to step in (not to mention other diners’ dishes which made me salivate through Sansab’s glass walls).

Lunch started off with drinks – lemongrass pandan (THB60) and coconut juice (THB60). The former was reminiscent of a similar, but more expensive drink at Din Tai Fung.

Dishes arrived surprisingly quickly, given that the restaurant was full-house during the lunch hour.

I ravenously climbed into a pot of tom yum goong (THB180), which blew my taste buds out. The rich broth was packed with flavor and was perfectly balanced in the holy trinity of sourness, sweetness and spiciness. It certainly helped that the Sansab chefs were generous with the soup’s fresh shrimp.

Other not-to-be-missed dishes include the sea bass num tok (THB390) as well as the spicy mushroom salad (THB130), both of which were topped with fragrant roasted rice powder.

The only, small gripe was with the winged bean salad, or yum tua poo (THB120) which was perhaps a touch too sweet. But maybe that’s just my non-native palate speaking.

The meal ended pleasantly with mango ice cream and sticky rice (THB89). The ice cream’s texture leaned towards that of a sorbet and tasted homemade. The dessert would sit perfectly well with sorbet lovers, but maybe not so much with those who prefer the traditional creamy smoothness found in most ice creams.
