Durex Thailand apologizes for inappropriate Facebook post

Durex will consult with an independent group of medical professionals and consumers to ensure its communications are “appropriate and respectful” after a Thai marketing campaign prompted widespread outrage.

The century-old British condom brand announced the move as it reiterated apologies for a marketing graphic shared on Facebook with an invented statistic saying “28% of women who say no give in at the end.”

“It absolutely goes against everything we stand for,” said a statement released by Durex Thailand today. “As a strong advocate for healthy and respectful relationships, we have the utmost respect for women and are committed to helping people love sex safely.”

The entire statement is below:

Durex reiterates that we sincerely regret and apologize for the inappropriate and offensive post made on our Durex Thailand Facebook page recently. Non-consensual sex is not a behaviour or attitude that Durex condones. It absolutely goes against everything we stand for. As a strong advocate for healthy and respectful relationships, we have the utmost respect for women and are committed to helping people love sex safely.

With a commitment to promoting sexual well-being that is safe and appropriate, Durex has conducted several sex education campaigns over the past few years, including grass-root sex education programs and distributing condoms on World AIDS Day to raise awareness on safe and healthy sex. In 2015, we will expand our grass-roots sex education program even further to educate more people and drive increased social awareness.

We are fully committed to initiate positive change to address any issues around sexual health and wellbeing and will be partnering with organizations focused on relationships and women’s rights, to be announced shortly.

In addition, to ensure all future communications and programs are appropriate and respectful, we’re creating a new Durex external advisory board to help guide what we say and do. It will be comprised of medical professionals, consumers and academics to advise and influence Durex programs and initiatives.
