Suvarnabhumi bike loop getting fancy makeover

The bicycle loop near Suvarnabhumi Airport is closed until Thursday for improvements to precede a multi-million baht renovation to be paid for by Siam Commercial Bank.

The Suvarnabhumi Airport’s bicycle loop is currently closed for while the southern entrance is shut down permanently and moved to the north side, according to state media.

Although a date has yet to be announced, the popular track will be shut down again for several months for a THB400-million upgrade intended to turn it into a world-class track

Airports of Thailand President Prasong Poonthanet said the organization has allowed SCB to take over the renovation project, initially developed by the AOT. The bank will improve the lane and maintain it for the next 10 years.

The bicycle lane will be doubled to eight-meters wide with a new, while another, three-kilometer loop is installed for beginners. Toilets will also be erected every five kilometers along the lane, he said.

Overhead lighting for cyclists, a bicycle repair shop and food court will also be added as the fancy upgrade is expected to take a few months.

“The bike lane will be improved to make it perfect,” he said. “It will serve as another landmark to draw cyclists from around the world to experience it.”

The bicycle tracks have been popular among cyclists since its opening in March. On weekends it welcomes approximately 2,000 people, Bangkok Post reported.
