Despondent, unemployed beach vendor commits suicide

A week after an official told beach vendors who’d asked for help finding new work to “get a job,” one of those unemployed men has killed himself. The Phuket News’ Eakkapop Thongtub has the story:

THE PHUKET NEWS — A sunbed-and-umbrella operator killed himself Monday likely due to depression after being ejected from the beach, police said.

Wichit police were called after the 45-year-old was found hanging by a nylon rope in his home in Mubaan Villa Suan Luang in Wichit. He had been dead for about two hours.

Police found no signs of foul play, assault or robbery.

After questioning neighbours they learned that he’d previously worked as a sunbed-and-umbrella operator but had been out of work since being expelled from the beach three months ago in an army-backed clean-up operation.

His girlfriend had left him two months ago, and he had since spoken to no one.
