Taxi drivers threaten to stop using meters without fare hike

The Bangkok Taxi Cooperatives Network has requested a 10-percent fare hike due to increased energy prices and costs of living.

In a letter submitted to Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha on Monday, the group made three requests including a fare increase based on travel distance, extending the mandatory retirement age for taxi vehicles from nine to 12 years, and tax exemptions for their vehicles.

Network President Withoon Naewpanich said his group would wait some time for the government to consider the issues. If their requests are ignored, taxi drivers in the capital will completely stop using their meters and negotiate the fares with customers themselves.

Withoon admitted that would be illegal, but said many drivers don’t earn any profit from their job while others earn less than the minimum wage of THB300 per day, Spring News reported.
