Ebola breakthrough: Siriraj Hospital announces antibody treatment

Researchers from Siriraj Hospital claimed today they have developed an antibody treatment for the Ebola virus.

At a much anticipated news conference this afternoon, doctors from the hospital’s Faculty of Medicine said they’ve successfully produced antibodies that work on an intracellular level to combat the deadly virus from within.

Doctors said they believe the treatment will work better than other products being developed. There are no widely available treatments for the Ebola virus, which has been ravaging West Africa for months, except for an experimental drug called ZMapp that’s show promise after it helped several infected patients to recover.

The Siriraj doctors warned however it could be another year before it can be mass-produced. Next will come a battery of animal testing before it’s given to any human subjects.

The researchers said their work itself was a breakthrough as they developed the antibody using similar viruses but did not actually handle any hot Ebola.
