Traffic police abruptly cancel anti-bribery bribes

A curious program launched last week to reward cops with cash handouts for rejecting bribes has been shut down.

The program, which offered cops THB10,000 if they arrested motorists who offered baksheesh, was brought to an unceremonious close by the acting city police chief who said it wouldn’t actually solve anything and the source of funding was unclear.

In a letter to the top traffic cop who announced it last week, acting city police chief Maj. Gen. Sriwara Rangsiphrammanakul said officers just need to enforce the law without fear or favor.

The campaign came under ridicule and criticism almost as soon as it was announced. In response, the Bangkok Post reports a group called the “Club for Justice Under Investigation” announced Saturday a counter-campaign targeting police: Anyone who records a policeman compelling a bribe can earn a THB20,000 reward.
