Locals on the fabled island of Phuket have discovered an enormous mudcrab, state media reports.

After a man said he bought it for THB700 from “an associate,” the crab also known as puu thonglang was so remarkably big he handed it over for display and study at a provincial wildlife office.

“Kasit Padungkan, a 29-year-old local in Phuket, held the crab in front of the media’s camera before sending it to the provincial office of the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources,” read the report.

Either the media’s camera was insufficient or the crab was just too damn big as no photo of the colossal crustacean was included with the report.

Turns out that habitat loss and shrimp farming have led to huge declines in the number of these once-abundant animals. Efforts to replant mangrove trees has helped spawn a recovery.

UPDATED: Okay we found a photo of the mudcrab. Sorry but it’s slightly less amazing.
