Can a few snapshots of travelers lazing in an airport illustrate worrying cultural divisions?
They can on the internet! While white people stare at books, Asians love their screens in a handful of photos which widely spread online today after they were posted by a Chinese website.
It’s notable in this space as the images stereotyping the behavior of European versus Chinese travelers are attributed to a Bangkok airport in the English-ified post which might have passed through your feed this morning. Actually only the first is, with the rest identified by the original as coming from a train station in Hangzhou, China.
But who’s to let some fact-checking spoil broad sociological generalizations.
What do you see here? White people pursuing knowledge and wisdom while Chinese tech-junkies distract themselves with mindless games? Or hyper-connected Chinese technophiles leaping up the evolutionary ladder while their fair-skinned friends fall behind?
It would help to know if the white people were digesting “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” or “Fifty Shades of Grey.”
