Fuel prices in flux

Any pain at the gas pump is because the true cost of energy hurts, officials say.

Prices are in flux as the government eases subsidies which have kept them low, part of a plan to correct gas prices to be in line with their actual cost, energy officials said.

The cost for LPG increased by 63 satang today. Gasohol 91 and 95 fell by 50 satang.

Energy Minister Narongchai Akrasanee said LPG prices had been subsidised in the face of upward price pressure around the world.

According to Thai PBS, such subsidies are being lifted as part of a movement to repeal the “populist policies” of “politicians in the past,” which seems a reference to prior elected governments led by or aligned with Thaksin Shinawatra.

At a ministry meeting Sunday, it was, however, decided to lower the gasohol prices to reduce the impact on consumers.

Prices for E20 and E85 remain the same.
