Phuket-based Soi Dog Foundation has rallied international star power to shine light on the Thailand’s dog meat trade.
A video capturing the horrified reactions of famous Brits such as comedian Ricky Gervais and Academy Award-winner Judi Dench to footage of the industry at work was released Friday to garner support for a petition urging stronger action against the illegal trade.
“I didn’t know that Thailand had such a dark and tragic secret,” says actress Penelope Wilton.
The campaign at this time has collected about 320,000 signatures of its half-million goal.
Although enforcement efforts have shut down and seen arrests in numerous dog meat operations, it’s become a thriving, profitable business. The meat is mostly smuggled into neighboring countries such as Vietnam and Laos where dog is on the menu.
All too frequently dogs have subject to harm including being made into leather, executed, hanged, stabbed, dragged and eaten.
