Viva la Revolucion! Kitsch Commie Cold War Cuba comes to Chinatown

Fall under the shadow of the hammer and sickle all over again Thursday in a tropical paradise from another time.

“Soy Cuba,” or “I am Cuba,” a once-forgotten Soviet-Cuban film from 1964 will screen at Cho Why in Chinatown.

The film was produced in post-revolution Cuba but was pretty much hated by everyone on the island and back in Mother Russia, so it was pulled from theaters and disappeared.

“Hidden away in the Soviet archives for three decades, Soy Cuba (I Am Cuba) is a wildly schizophrenic celebration of Communist kitsch, mixing Slavic solemnity with Latin sensuality,” reads the description. “A whirling, feverish dance through both the sensuous decadence of Batista’s Havana and the grinding poverty and oppression of the Cuban people.

Sounds good, but some mojitos, cuba libres and music will be on hand to help lubricate the time machine.
