Mei Wei! Boon Pochana does Taiwanese right

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — While trying to drive along Silom Road on a recent day – actually more like failing to get anywhere – I used the crazy traffic as an excuse to try a restaurant I’d never noticed before. With no expectations walking in, I found it to be not just a place to fill up an empty stomach, but also an awesome spot to have a jolly gathering over homey Chinese food.

Boon Pochana is the place I’m talking about. I guess locals have known it a long time judging from how fairly busy it is even at 9pm. The room is filled with lively noises of satisfied customers. But to further paint a picture of its ambience, I have to mention how frequently Chinese is heard among the service staff – which more or less assures me the restaurant knows what they’re doing.

And they really do. The foods remind me of 100 percent, non-touristy restaurants in Guangzhou. Surely Boon Pochana is not the kind of place to serve royal-looking platters of pricey Chinese seafood delicacies; it does however cater to you with countless affordable Chinese dishes Chinese people in their homeland actually order to eat on a regular basis.

For Boon Pochana, I don’t necessarily have to recommend any particular dishes since pretty much everything I’ve tried so far I can never have enough of. If I really must though, I’d say you shouldn’t miss their amazingly addictive Squid Calamari with Garlic and Spiced Salt (THB200), Spicy Salad of Preserved Eggs (THB100), Gai-Aob-Greu (Steamed Salty Chicken), Mapo Tofu (Tofu with Sichuan-style Sauce, THB90), Stir-Fried Eggplant Sichuan-Style (THB120) and at least one of the spare ribs dishes. For more adventurous eaters, please do not pass on my favorite Deep-Fried Frog Legs with Garlic and Spiced Salt (THB200) and Fried Pig’s Kidney (THB180).

Thinking about driving there already? Well, please be reminded that the restaurant is almost completely hidden from sight on Silom Road; you have to really pay careful attention, or you’ll just drive right by the entrance. When headed up Silom toward Rama IV Road, just before crossing the intersection over the canal at Naradhiwas, turn left into the small dodgy-looking alley next to the street-side Shangri-La restaurant, and voila, Boon Pochana will be in front of you.
