Meditation-obsessed, machete-wielding maniac attacks wife and cop who shoots his foot and backup

Is this a real crime report from Surat Thani or a scene from a slapstick police comedy?

During the arrest of a machete-swinging Myanmar man yesterday, a police officer shot himself in the foot, injured the attacker in the leg and grazed the torso of an investigator who’d arrived to back him up. Let that imagery sink in while proceeding on to the details.

IT ALL BEGAN when police officer Surachet Sapharnthong went to investigate a report that a 31-year-old man, identified only as Sui, was trying to attack his wife and neighbors, according to the Bangkok Post. (With a machete.)

The epic scene that ensued could be very well be television gold:

When Pol Sen Sgt Maj Surachet Sapharnthong, chief of Barng Madua police station’s crime suppression unit, and a duty officer pulled up outside, Mr Sui charged them with a machete, forcing them to retreat, witnesses said. Sen Sgt Maj Surachet fell and his gun accidentally discharged a bullet into his left foot. Mr Sui leapt at him and was about to hack him with the machete, but the officer fired at his leg, wounding him and driving him back. Pol Maj Amorn Chaisilp, an investigation inspector who arrived at the scene to back up the officers, narrowly escaped serious injury when the bullet fired by Snr Sgt Maj Surachet grazed his torso.

Before you get the wrong idea about Sui, his wife wife and employer swear he’s a friendly guy who doesn’t drink or do drugs.

In fact, Sui recently purchased a series of dhamma practice and meditation CDs. He became really obsessed with listening to the CDs, and invited others to join him in practicing, but no one was interested.

We don’t know whether that rejection tipped Sui into machete-rampage mode, but it’s clear he should get a refund for those meditation CDs.

The police have charged Sui with attempted murder and resisting arrest.

ONLY. LISTEN. ONCE. (Coconuts Bangkok not responsible for excessive meditation-music listening.)

And here’s the amazing Special Head to give this story some Karmic balance.
