Surely we’ve heard this story before: Boy meets girl, chats her up on Line, steals her car and runs off to a monastery.
Rathana Chuthachan, 41, was arrested in Bangkok on Saturday for allegedly stealing a car from the woman he’d been wooing with cute stickers for the better part of a year.
After chatting up his unidentified lady friend for about six months on Line, the taxi driver built on those months of textual chemistry to gain access to the key to her Suzuki Swift, police said.
After he got the key, authorities said Rathana got a cousin to take the car away. The final phase of his sneaky plot was placing the key back in the victim’s room to rule out his involvement, police believe. He also took her to the police station to file a theft report.
After that it was buh-bye, as Rathana apparently got out of town and checked himself into a temple as an ordained monk, Bangkok Post reports.
The victim finally saw through his ruse and filed a complaint against Rathana, upon which the police swiftly placed a THB30,000 bounty on his head. Upon his return to the capital from his enlightenment-seeking, Rathana was picked up by the police in the Ramkhamhaeng area.
But don’t judge him too quickly. Under questioning Rathana admitted that he genuinely wanted the woman to be his girl, but financial desperation drove him to steal her car to fix his taxi. Truly a crime of passion.
