Five decades ago, an impoverished Yokluen Chankaew gave up the daughter she’d had with an Australian mine manager to a childless British couple. She gave her the name Tuktaw Chankaew and then never expected to see the girl.
On Friday, Yokluen met Tuktaw – now Kimberley Ferreivg – at an emotional mother-daughter reunion on Phuket, 54 years after she was born.
“I thought I couldn’t raise her up into a comfortable life,” Yokluen said in Khaosod English.
Ferreivg, 54, said she learned about 30 years ago that she was born to a Thai woman and decided in September to find her mom. She intitially came to Koh Phangan, confusing it with her place of birth in Phang Nga province.
“I ended up on Phangan, but luckily a clerk at the hotel where I stayed on Phangan gave me a lot of help and sought out all the information,” Kimberley said.
With the help of local officials, it still took several months to find Yokluen, now 79, but the mother-daughter reunion finally happened Friday when the mother and daughter embraced at an emotional meeting facilitated by local administrators.
