Paranoia roils over healthy man from Ebola-stricken nation

Ebolamania is running wild as tourist destinations put out the word to look for a man health officials say didn’t check in with them as requested. Samuel Sesay was reportedly healthy when he arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport earlier this month, but health officials wanted him to be physically monitored regardless. An abundance of caution is understandable, given that Sesay hails from Sierra Leone, where thousands have been infected. However there is no reason to believe Sesay is infected with the virus. THE PHUKET NEWS — Phuket and other police stations around the country are on the alert for sightings of an African man who has dropped off the radar after arriving in Thailand after arriving from one of the countries affected by Ebola.

Health officials are keen to find Samuel Sesay, 30, who arrived from Sierra Leone, where more than 6,000 people have contracted the highly dangerous disease. As of November 16, more than a quarter of that number were recorded as dying from Ebola.

Officials are concerned that Sesay may be carrying the disease.

Mr Sesay was checked on his arrival at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok from Amsterdam by Department of Disease Control officials.

His physical condition was checked and blood samples taken, after which he was taken to the Mode Sathorn Hotel in north Sathon.

He was asked to report to the DDC on Nov. 16 but did not. He since checked out of the hotel.

Department officials alerted the police, asking them to find him as soon as possible, but so far this has proved impossible. Now the alert has gone nationwide.

An announcement warned that any official finding him must stay where they are, and prevent other people from coming into close proximity. “Do not touch his skin or body,” the announcement added. “Report to your superior fast and also call the Department of Disease Control at 02-590-3000.”
