Over the past decade, at least 182,237 women and children sought help after being physically assaulted or raped, mostly by the people they trust.

On the occasion of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Ministry of Public Health announced Tuesday its help center for battered women and children had helped over 182,267 victims in the 10 years.

In its 10 years of service, the center has assisted 98,211 children and 84,026 women, most of which were victims of rape or sexual assault with physical abuse being the second most recorded crime.

Such violence was mostly caused by the hands of people they trusted such as husbands, boyfriends and friends, according to health Secretary Narong Sahamethapat.

Those only represent the official count of reported instances of violence, Matichon reported, and the real number is likely significantly higher.
