A downtown shopping mall popular with teenagers declared Wednesday that the pungent odor of a highly toxic and flammable gas has been eradicated.
More than a month after news broke of spreading sickness and frustration among shop owners over mall management’s inaction in dealing with the problem, Siam Square One Vice President Boonsong Srisawangnet declared to a group of reporters the smell of leaking hydrogen sulfide has been eradicated.
A city sanitation officer confirmed the toxic gas smell was gone. However there was no word whether the gas itself was entirely gone.
Municipal environmental sanitation officer Paitoon Ngammuk, according to the Bangkok Post, “confirmed that the hydrogen sulphide smell had gone.”

Most people can smell hydrogen sulfide, which reeks of rotten eggs, at very low levels. If it can’t be smelled, it shouldn’t pose a health risk, according to data from the US National Institutes of Health.
A Department of Health inspection on Sept. 29 reportedly found alarmingly dangerous levels of 83 ppm in the structure’s basement level. The corrosive gas even damaged metal coins and other products exposed to it.
Since the smelly health scandal started, 31 out of the 300 tenants asked to terminate their contracts with the mall.
