On Tonight: Find out how one video pirate influenced Thai filmmaking

They shattered his fancy prize, but that hasn’t stopped Nawapol “Ter” Thamrongrattanarit.

The indie filmmaker famous for “Mary is Happy, Mary is Happy” will screen his latest documentary project “The Master” tonight about a little bootleg video seller named “Van VDO” and how it influenced Thai filmmaking through interviews with film directors, critics and radio hosts.

In the dark ages before BitTorrent, one of the few places cinephiles could find works by directors such as Wong Kar Wai or Takeshi Kitano or other art films was “Van VDO,” which shut down long ago.

This film features discussions with Pen-Ek Ratanaruang, Songyos Sugmakanan, Kong Rithdee and Yuthana Boonorm to explore the life of Mr. Van and look for answers.

Was Mr. Van like Robin Hood? Was it okay to violate copyright law for the sake of cultural education? Or was “Violating copyright law for the sake of education” just another excuse by careless consumers who don’t care for the cost of making a film?

Screening at House RCA, this film is in Thai only. Tickets are THB100.
