Assembly closes ‘marriage’ loophole for minor rape victims

The appointed legislature approved stronger measures for incidents of minor-on-minor and statutory rape yesterday.

Seeking to eliminate loopholes that allowed families to privately settle such attacks and avoid prosecution, the National Legislative Assembly amended Article 277 to close a loophole which allowed someone under 18 to avoid prosecution if they married their minor victim.

Now anyone under 18 who rapes a minor 13 to 15, even with consent, can be prosecuted, according to Thai PBS.

Before, many families settled the matter with cash compensation and an agreement to marry to avoid prosecution, according to Assemblyman Wallop Tangkhananurak.
